Vision
As a multidisciplinary artist, it is my goal to create an ambiance for an environment, whether it is a commercial or residential space. I believe that high quality original art should be affordable to everyone. I make it affordable by using technology to create multiple copies, work with small originals for print art and reuse video clips in multiple layers. By marrying the best of technology and traditional techniques, the final output has richness and uniqueness. I maintain the integrity of the work by limiting reproductions to editions of 250, and by creating all components of the work from scratch.
Inspirations for Sequences are primarily patterns, repetitive motion and textures found in nature and on the streets of New York City. From these sources I generate richly layered and strikingly colored Videoscapes that oscillate on the border of perceptibility, and challenge reality as defined by our senses. These unique visual treats were born from a library of moving photographs created over several years. I focus on scenes for a minimum of one minute, as if I were shooting a long exposure photograph, but I am shooting video. The source material is the digitally manipulated, but the underlying focus is maintained creating a hypnotic effect. Itıs hypnotic because todayıs barrage of media prevents us from focussing on any visual stimulation for long than a couple of seconds, at most. Viewers are left becoming unwittingly absorbed.
For over 20 years, my work has always explored the cutting edge of technology. The trend I see now is the ubiquity of large screen monitors and televisions with better resolution. Today, the average U.S. home has three TV's. In about three years, it's expected that the price of large, high- definition televisions will drop dramatically. As the real estate of televisions occupies more space in the residence, it makes sense to utilize them during their "down time." Having a library of DVD's of moving "paintings," as one now has a library of CD's, seems inevitable. Why restrict your space to stagnant images that hang on your wall for years when they can be changed to fit your mood or to instill an ambiance?
The multiple functionality of the TV is part of the evolution of the networking of the home. As WiFi networking technology becomes common in the components of your home -- TV, stereo system, computer, lighting design, kitchen appliances -- you will have more control over your environment, and you will be more interested in the ability to change your art -- and have it be animated. Anyone who has seen the picture quality of high definition plasma screens understands the bar is being raised when it comes to video entertainment.
"In a time of excessive stress and distress, I think it's important to remember to relax and enjoy the beautiful things in life. I hope that my work can let the viewer escape to a pleasant place for a few moments and become rejuvenated."
